Firestone Walker | Union Jack IPA 7.5%

I tried it once whilst in Colorado and I bought a bottle of it a few weeks ago.Union Jack seems to be crowd favourite among craft beer folk and I’ve never been let down by Firestone Walker. The malt profile is very sweet for an IPA and the hop flavours are citrus-y but in a … Continue reading Firestone Walker | Union Jack IPA 7.5%

Brouwerij Huyghe | Delirium Tremens 8.5%

Delirium Tremens, named for a most unpleasant symptom of alcohol withdrawal, is categorized as a Belgian strong ale. This beer is everything you want from a funky Belgian brew. Complex flavours, a high ABV with little to no ethanol taste, yeast sediment. It pours a rich golden colour with fluffy carbonation. The malt profile is … Continue reading Brouwerij Huyghe | Delirium Tremens 8.5%

Alesmith | Yulesmith summer ale | 8.5% ABV

Firstly I apologise for disappearing. In short I’ve been planning to move abroad and the logistics have been a nightmare so I’ve had less time to commit to great beer these past few months. I am alive and drinking though so please stay tuned for more regular updates.  Alesmith! Right, Alesmith. This lovely San Diego … Continue reading Alesmith | Yulesmith summer ale | 8.5% ABV

Post Brewing Co. | Big Rosie Porter 6.8%

This little brewery is tucked away in Lafayette, Colorado near Boulder. They’re known for their fried chicken but I came specifically to gorge myself on breakfast food. A glass of Big Rosie porter appeared in front of me as well. Left Hand Brewing | Nitro Milk Stout 6%

I tried this from the nitro bottle at Salt in Boulder, Colorado and it was perfectly poured with a tall, foamy head. Salt is a fantastic farm-to-table restaurant on Pearl Street with dangerously tasty food and a good selection of local brews and other craft beer.     If you’re not familiar with the nitro pour, … Continue reading Left Hand Brewing | Nitro Milk Stout 6%

Lost Abbey | Red Barn 6.7%

Yes, another farmhouse ale! If you follow Brewnette you know to expect saisons to be delightfully overrepresented on this blog. As the name suggests Lost Abbey specializes in Belgium styles like farmhouse ales and Abbey/Monastic style brews.    This is a pale yellow beer that pours cloudy but clears up pretty quickly. It has the standard … Continue reading Lost Abbey | Red Barn 6.7%

Ommegang Brewery | Three Eyed Raven 7.2% ABV

It’s times for me to come out and say I don’t watch Game of Thrones so I can’t throw in clever, topical references or puns. This beer showed up in my home one day so I figured I’d drink it so it wouldn’t feel left out. Ommegang calls this a dark saison and it has … Continue reading Ommegang Brewery | Three Eyed Raven 7.2% ABV

Maui Brewing Co. | CoCoNut Porter

Maui Brewing Co. | CoCoNut Porter

I’m a consummate coconut zealot so this was an easy sell for me. It pours opaque brown with modest carbonation and just fluffy, tan collar.     The toasty coconut flavor dominates in the best way possible. It’s not candy sweet like some coconut flavored drinks but has a rather savory umami character like coconut … Continue reading Maui Brewing Co. | CoCoNut Porter

Mike Hess Brewing | Grazias Cream Ale 5.4%

I’m happy  to bring you all another San Diego gem, this time from Mike Hess Brewing Co.     This dark red beauty has clean molasses malts and a touch of sweetness and white, fluffy lacing. Its juicy ester flavors are varied, featuring stone fruits and maybe berries? To me the medium hop bitterness has a … Continue reading Mike Hess Brewing | Grazias Cream Ale 5.4%

Alpine Beer Company | Captain Stout 6% ABV

Alpine Beer Company | Captain Stout 6% ABV

Captain Stout has a nice, big, roasty flavor and strong espresso character. Esters are mostly dark fruit, maybe raisin, but very low and I found the hop bitterness earthy and understated.  I’m not certain what kind of hops went into this but they’re grassy or herbal in character and they play very well with the … Continue reading Alpine Beer Company | Captain Stout 6% ABV
