Captain Stout has a nice, big, roasty flavor and strong espresso character. Esters are mostly dark fruit, maybe raisin, but very low and I found the hop bitterness earthy and understated. I’m not certain what kind of hops went into this but they’re grassy or herbal in character and they play very well with the other notes in this brew! Nice change from aggressive west coast hops that I usually adore. Tall, khaki head with persistent lacing and light bodied for an oatmeal stout with a dry finish.
There is a touch of bitterness and some smoke from those dark malts and the impression that stuck with me was drip coffee though I didn’t detect a particularly strong aroma. It definitely punches above its 31 IBU.
I regret that I didn’t think to order this on nitro! I think it would’ve brought out some of the more vanilla and woodsy notes.
