Craft beer and tasty food are among the greatest joys in life. There’s a reason nobody’s ever unhappy in brewpub!
The first dish I’m going to pair with a refreshing craft beer is from Kate Marino’s beautiful blog focusing on wellness and healthy eating. Here’s a link to Kate’s blog with a wealth of nutritious recipes, musings on mindfulness, and beautiful photography.
One of her most recent recipes is a chipotle chicken sandwich with fried onions, avocado, and roasted sweet potatoes on the side. The recipe is very straightforward so you can duplicate this fancy-cafe-style sandwich as a weeknight dinner or lunch with some pals!
Pairing beer and food is rather less prescriptive than pairing wine and food.
To me it’s sort almost like putting an outfit together in that the pieces don’t necessarily have to match but they should go together for the best effect.
I would pair this with an American Pale Ale like Karl Strauss’s APA or one of the many other craft ales in this style.
The moderate to high hop bitterness and a high level of efferveesce will cut through richer flavors like avocado slices, mayonnaise , and cheese but won’t overwhelm all that spicy chipotle goodness.
This style will also have some malt flavor to balance with the punchy American hops. Because we want the chipotle spice flavors to shine through, an APA will complement the sandwich because it doesn’t have that bouquet of complex yeast flavors like fruit, musk, and spice. The only things I would avoid pairing with Kate’s recipe is dark malts and sour beers.
Bon appetit!
